I recently participated in Style Week, a class seemingly inspired by the “unconventional challenges” on the television show Project Runway. I was challenged to create a garment constructed entirely of non-cloth material to be worn by a model at a fashion show and presented to a panel of judges. I designed, created, and constructed a dress solely using soda can tabs. Held together by the linking of several hundred soda-can tabs to create chainmail with no glue involved. Given my need for soda can tabs, I asked my friends to collect more. With each small can tab I collected, I saw how the hundreds of tabs normally tossed into the trash can have a practical application by creating a large woven material. The garment is a beautiful mesh of everyone’s trash.
